History
[edit | change source]
The airport was originally built for military use. The airport, where Turkish Airlines started to operate its scheduled flights first in a small hut and then in a 300 square meter terminal building since 1960, was opened to international traffic in 1985.[4] In parallel with the developments in domestic and international tourism, the construction of the airport's first international terminal was started by Bayındır Holding in July 1996 and the terminal was put into service in April 1998.[5] This terminal is the first airport terminal operation in Turkey where the build-operate-transfer model is applied.[4][5] In 1999, Fraport purchased fifty percent of the terminal business from Bayındır Holding, the operator of the international terminal, for 25 million euros.[6] In April 2006, it acquired the remaining shares from Bayındır Holding and became the sole owner of the terminal business.[7]
In order to manage the increasing international passenger traffic of the region, the construction and operation of the second international terminal was tendered by DHMI. The Çelebi Holding-IC Holding consortium, which won the tender, started construction in May 2004 and the terminal became operational in April 2005.[5] Çelebi-IC consortium operated the terminal until September 2009, when the contract expired.[8] Both international terminals were included in the list of 50 Works in 50 Years of the Chamber of Civil Engineers.[5]
In May 2007, the Fraport-IC consortium acquired the operating rights of the airport's domestic and first international terminals, VIP and CIP terminals, and the second international terminal, starting from 2009, for 2.4 billion euros and to be used until the end of 2024.[ 9] This consortium renovated the existing domestic terminal with an investment of 100 million euros, and the renewed terminal started to serve in April 2010, 11 months after the construction started.[10] In May 2018, TAV Airports became an equal partner with Fraport by purchasing the shares of IC İçtaş.[9]
The airport was awarded the "Best Airport in Europe" award in the "10-25 million passengers" category by Airports Council International in 2011.[11][12]
